Been a long time…
February 21, 2007It’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything here, mostly because real life has taken a front seat (as it should). I’m not going to bother discussing the political situation over the last few months - there are plenty of places that do that very very well. Just wanted to highlight a few things -
Trip to Perth: I was going to post a big writeup on the blog, but I never got around to it. The trip was great! Perth is now my second-favourite city in Australia, Hobart being the first. Rottnest Island is very beautiful, although I’d like to stay at a proper Hotel next time instead of the Backpackers Hostel.
Star Trek Remastered: I was very sceptical of this idea, as it was too similar to Lucas’s own remastered DVD’s. But the results have been excellent, especially when you consider the tight deadlines that the CBS effects team must be under. They’ve just released the Doomsday Machine, and the results were pretty impressive.
Doctor Who: Saw the Runaway Bride on Boxing Day. This is the first new series episode to have a full Orchestral score. On the whole, it was bigger, louder and more brash than previous Who episodes. Catherine Tate was great as Donna - annoying at first, but a more sympathetic character by the end. Wasn’t as impressed by the 3rd Series trailer as I was of the 2nd Series teaser, but I still hope it’ll be another great season of Who.
Transformers: The more and more I hear of this, the more I’m thinking this is going to be a film with the name ‘Transfomers’, but having almost nothing in common with the cartoon/comic/manga series on which it’s based. Nevertheless, I’ll go to see it, if only to see transforming robots and big-budgets special effects.
Star Trek XI: Unlike most geek film critics, I enjoyed MI3. I thought it was much closer to the spirit of the original series than its predecessors. So I’m looking forward to see what JJ Abrams can do with Star Trek. I wish they’d given it a longer rest, but I hope that Abrams can bring Star Trek in new and creative directions for the 21st Century.
