Changing House

November 25, 2007

Wow.

A few months ago I said I thought the Coalition would win, but I hoped I was wrong. I have never been so happy to be wrong in my entire life. Now I know (at least a little) how my father felt about Gough Whitlam’s win in 1974. I just hope the outcome is more positive than what eventually transpired.

This isn’t just a repudiation of Workchoices. And Climate Change Denial. It’s also a repudiation of the wedge tactic that reached its ultimate form in Lindsay. Labor learned this same lesson in ‘96 - don’t lose respect for the voters.

And so a new day has dawned - at least in Canberra. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact we have a new Prime Minister - Kevin Rudd. One who will ratify Kyoto and combat Climate Change. Who will not (hopefully) demonise ethnic minorities, and instead embrace them as fellow Australians. There’s so much there to absorb over the next few months. I’m looking forward to it.
