Reconciliation
February 12, 2008I never thought I’d live to see the day.
What a difference only three months makes! The previous Government didn’t feel the need to make an apology. I’ve just heard the new Prime Minister make an official apology to the Aboriginal Stolen Generations. The entire audience gave him a standing ovation. Now when was the last time you saw a politician get a standing ovation that spontaneous for anything?
For this one moment, the voices of the Far-Right cultural warriors have been temporarily silenced. What’s most interesting is hearing the Liberal Opposition’s reply. It’s interesting seeing how they try to meld the Stolen Generations history with their own Nationalist take on Australia. Hopefully this will form the core from which Conservatives can grapple with Aboriginal Reconciliation.
