Also, when you hear things that like. You don't have much choice but to not feel Australian. I believe in a country that judges people on their actions - not fucking anything else, Skins colours, looks, race is all bullshit. The more we point it out the more we create the schizms in society that get frustrated and act out.

But honestly, I hope you don't take my word for it and just see for yourself. Lots of great Australians who would embrace you as an Aussie. Just my opinions and feelings.

I don't blame you. MY friends are from the Philippines and all around there. I grew up with them, even though I am white, they fed me and gave me advice. They are always friendly and - it almost brings a tear to my eye - they are like an extended family to me - even though many don't know my name LOL. They just know it's me, the kid who was a good friend to their kids.

I am the one who is considering my ties to this country. I say it out loud, but many of my friends are really wondering quite often about Australia. It's traditions - lots of stuff. For instance I read quite abit Australian and World War history and we have a great tradition of not giving a shit. I think the turning point for me was when Gallopoli was trashed by tourists...well meaning blah blah. I'm no dissenter but upon talking to people they know nothing about Australia but just know to follow the cultural mores - well, it's gotten to the point where you can't walk into a pub without knowing something about sport etc - you can't look different unless your with a group of people. I love to be myself, with and without people.

The counn't assimilate argument is VERY strong. With the people I know - they can't stand Asians. I often question their logic and it runs something like: "they tried to invade, their numbers are huge, they want our lifestyles and they can't be bothered speaking the language". Nevermind they have troubles speaking it themselves... English is a difficult language to learn. They don't like Japanese because of events in World War 2 they have littler understanding of. They say nasty things about asian women being hookers. Funny once or twice...I'd hate to go to china and hear them say the shit I hear about Australian Women...

Australia is a great country but some strange things are stirring up. I don't like it. My family are immigrant from Europe and they don't like it. Used to be: Work Hard, be honest and your ok. Now it's all kinds of shit.

That said, perhaps only a small miniority are like this. But there it is. Not a good thing.

Yeah, that's my point of view pretty much. You'll get people saying how terrible it is, but secretly looking at it later. I know plently of guys that think it's a non-issue (just wait till she gets afew years older lololol). Sometimes I truly wonder... It's not just my friends but friends of friends you drink with etc,. A small sample but indicative enough for me. I hate marketing more - it's like, so pervasive in society, imagine being a girl with all these different images. Robyn has a great song called: "Who's that girl" all about trying to fit into all the stereotypes men have in their heads and she is like: "nah fuck it, I'll just do my own thing". Anyway, it IS art, and art is often a by-product of society but at least it's saying something and not selling something.

That's a huge price difference WTF. I just ordered a new comp from Melbourne. 9800GTX, OC duo core, 4gig 800mhz ra ra ra. It's easier to buy stuff from your local but well-known (online etc.) people. I have put up with huge price hikes as well living out in the sticks. They call them "Mine Taxes" a funny way of saying: "we're ripping you the fuck off and you can't do shit because your earn so much and we explain it away with petrol prices and stuff..."

I know at least one colleague who's a non-Middle Eastern Muslim. He's a very nice, well-spoken English-born bloke. I've learned that Islam is a very diverse religion. You've got your frothing-at-the-mouth extremists, but you've also got the quieter moderate types who go about their daily business and quite happily integrate into society.

I have some very unpleasant memories of 1996, when Pauline Hanson began vilifying Asians and claiming that "they couldn't assimilate". It really hurt our family - you'd think after 30 years happily living in the country and making a contribution we wouldn't feel a need to "prove" ourselves to anyone. It really caused me to question the deep ties and loyalites I had to the country of my birth.

I understand your point of view. I actually wrote that posting before reading an article by Germaine Greer. She made the point that many classic artists painted portraits of underage boys and girls and weren't hung for it. Looking back on it, I would've preferred a rational debate rather than the jumping-up-and-down we got from the mainstream press.

I can't speak for every Taswegian, but I don't think we should disassociate ourselves from the mainland for one simple reason - shopping bargains! Computer parts are awfully expensive down here - I was quoted $725 for a 24" LCD Monitor which would cost ~$600 in Sydney.

You understand that the minister might agree with his advisers but as you apted noted before: Image is everything, and more people are going to like to hear what they believe. Incidentally, did you hear about the Muslim school that was shut down in the outback - what are your opinions on that. To be honest, It scared me alittle, I don't like bullshit cults setting up in Australia. Muslim ISN'T a cult - but it sure seemed like it.

That is art. It's not pornography at all. You should watch some porn. It's not just about context - Bill was trying to show the fragility of young girls. Never mind they are naked. If they were 3 years older and in a Bikini on top of a V8 people would be fucking cheering. Here we have some honestly about young girls - it's not dothery in her maid's dress, it's a young girl. Just htink of all the bullshit that will be thrown at her by advertising, culture, the stereotypes. In a few years, maybe now even, we will be ASSUMED to have posed FAR more provokotively on myspace or for friends photographs.

Just my 2c. I don't support that sort of art, but I understand where it might be coming from. I'm not into the art crowd or anything. But I can't stand hypocrisy on this issue.
